Combine the lives and experiences of Don Quixote, Walter Mitty, and Forrest Gump and you approach
the true life of our author, Robert X. Leeds

After recovering from a year of childhood paralysis from rheumatic fever, Robert dropped out of high school and went to sea.

At sixteen he made his first of one hundred and sixty free-fall parachute jumps.

Participating in airs shows with such famous aviation pioneers as Roscoe Turner and Em Avery, Robert formed his own air circus but quit when he fell 7,000 feet with both his parachutes fouled. (He walked away uninjured.)

Too young to enlist in World War II, Robert joined the Merchant Marines and spent six months in the South Pacific.

Upon returning, he became the only high school drop-out accepted into the
U. S. Air Cadet training program. (He simply wrote a letter to the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Air Force, begging to be accepted.)

He's not sure how we won the war without him finishing flight school, but upon discharge in 1945, he took off to spend seven years traveling around the world.

With opportunities to get paid in uncut diamonds, operate a landing craft on the Zambezi River, smuggle guns to the natives in Madagascar, and to join an expedition to find the lost treasure of the pirate, Captain Cook, Robert's life never lacked for exciting quests.

Arrested in Portuguese East Africa on a charge of gun running, he was "deported" back to South Africa where he spent the remaining portion of his travels in jails, detention barracks, and finally, in their notorious condemned prison, Roelandstraat Goal.

Betrayed by the American Consulate, Leeds was put on an old tramp steamer supposedly headed to America. Instead, it was bound for China to be sold to Chang Kai Shek.

Stranded in China, he decided to volunteer to join the Chinese Army and fight the "evil" Communists.

Promptly arrested as a Communist spy, he was placed against a wall for a hastily assembled firing squad. His escape is duly noted in this biography as is his appearance with the Israeli Air Force in the 1947-1948 middle East war only a few months later.

If you can abide the credulous and the gullible you'll enjoy this fascinating story of an Irish immigrant's starry-eyed Knight in cancelled mail as he jousts with our 20th century windmills.
